The Do's & Don'ts Pearl Care Guide (10 Best Tips)

This blog post is going to show you the best pearl care tips to keep your pearls looking shiny and beautiful for a long time.

Investing in pearl jewelry is always a great choice! They're timeless and add a sophisticated touch to your wardrobe! But if you want to keep them as healthy and radiant as the day you got them, it's important to have a good pearl care routine!

The good news is that taking care of your pearl jewelry isn't actually that complicated. In fact, it's quite low-maintenance! The one thing to keep in mind is that pearls are just a bit sensitive to their environment, and if neglected, they can lose their lustre and even turn brittle. Yikes!

But, don't you worry because here we are covering the 10 best do's and don'ts to keep your pearls beautiful and shiny for generations.

The Do's & Don'ts Pearl Care Guide (10 Best Tips)

Do's:

1. Wear Them Often

The natural oils and moisture from your skin do wonders in keeping your pearls hydrated and shiny. Though there are some few exceptions (which we'll get into), we actually recommend you wearing them as often as possible as they love to be worn!

2. Wipe with a Soft Cloth

For your daily cleaning and keeping them looking fresh, don't use use anything rough to scrub as pearls are delicate and may scratch! Just use a soft microfiber cloth and give it a gentle wipe.

3. Lay Them Flat in A Jewelry Box

To store them, we recommend placing them laying down in a jewelry box with a soft lining and not too close to other jewelry pieces. This keeps them safe from dust and scratches.

4. Use Mild Unscented Soap for Deep Cleaning

If your pearls start to capture build-up from usage, just use a very mild ivory soap or castile soap for a deep clean. Make sure it's unscented and wash gently in lukewarm water with a soft microfiber cloth. Give them a nice wipe down and lay them to dry. Once they're nice and dry you can start wearing them daily again!

Don'ts:

1. Don't Store in Airtight Containers

Earlier we recommended to store them in a nice jewelry box. But we sometimes hear or see customer store their pearl jewelry in air-tight containers! Whether that would be a plastic Ziploc bag or a tupperware, this is a huge no-no! The reason is because keeping the pearls somewhere airtight and enclosed can actually dry them out quicker and make them brittle! If you don't have a jewelry box, you can tuck them away wrapped in a soft cloth safely inside your drawers!

2. Don't hang them

Typically necklaces can be hung on your jewelry stand or in your jewelry box. However, when it comes to pearl necklaces or pearl bracelets, this is a bad idea. Because pearls are strung together using silk threads, hanging them up can stretch out the threads overtime from gravity and the weight of the pearls. So it's best to lay them flat to keep them in the best shape!

3. Don't Shower or Swim in Them

Water, especially chlorinated water, damages pearl jewelry. Though a little rain won't hurt from time to time, we do recommend to take them off when you shower, take a bath, or go swimming.

4. Keep Away from Perfume, Makeup, Hairspray

When applying cosmetic products such as makeup, perfume or even hair spray, make sure to keep your pearl jewelry off so that it doesn't get direct contact. The chemicals in these beauty products can actually damage your pearls. So do your beauty routine first and then lay your pearl jewelry on last!

5. Take Them off When Cleaning

If you are ever cleaning the house or doing anything that involves using chemicals, we also recommend you to take off your pearl jewelry. The fumes and accidental splatters of chemicals will damage the pearls and silk. Hence, keep your precious pearls safe and away to avoid it!

6. Don't Work Out with Them

A light walks and a bit of perspiration during your daily walks during the day won't hurt your pearl jewelry. But if you decide to work out and do an intense exercise, it's best to take them off! Prolonged exposure from heavy sweat may weaken the silk threads and dull the pearls.

Taking care of your pearls takes just a bit more love and attention than most jewelry. But if you follow these easy steps in this pearl care guide, your pearl jewelry will stay healthy and beautiful for as long as you have them!
